Two thirds of all Alzheimer's cases in the world are women. That is not a small detail, and science has spent years trying to understand why. Part of the answer has to do with hormonal biology: the drop in estrogen during menopause reduces the natural protection this hormone provides to the brain, increasing vulnerability to cognitive decline. What many women don't know is that diet is one of the most powerful and accessible tools available to counter that risk, and that certain foods in particular have solid scientific evidence behind them.

1. Blueberries and Other Berries

Blueberries are arguably the most studied food in relation to brain health. They are rich in anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid that crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts directly on neurons, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. A study published in PMC found significant improvements in memory in older adults with early cognitive decline after 12 weeks of consumption. Raspberries and strawberries also offer similar benefits, though with a somewhat lower concentration of anthocyanins. The recommendation is to include them fresh or frozen several times a week, as freezing preserves their bioactive compounds well.

2. Leafy Green Vegetables

Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are concentrated sources of vitamin K, lutein, folate, and beta-carotenes, nutrients directly linked to the preservation of cognitive function. A Harvard study that followed more than 900 older adults over five years found that those who consumed one daily serving of leafy green vegetables had a brain cognitively equivalent to being 11 years younger than those who did not. One important note: whenever possible, choose the organic version. The pesticides used in conventional leafy green production are among the highest of any crop, and some studies link them to a higher risk of cognitive decline.

3. Fatty Fish

Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna are sources of DHA and EPA, the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids the brain needs to maintain the integrity of its cell membranes and reduce neuronal inflammation. Research from the University of Texas linked higher DHA levels to a significant reduction in Alzheimer's risk. The recommendation from most studies is to consume fatty fish at least twice a week. Wild salmon, sardines, and mackerel are the options with the highest omega-3 concentration and the lowest mercury content.

Diet is not everything, but it is one of the most modifiable factors available to us. And for women over 40, incorporating these three foods regularly is one of the smartest decisions they can make for their long-term brain health.
